Sinusoidal gratings are commonly used in psychophysical experiments. The effective contrast of such a grating depends on the nature of the display's pixel intensity profile, especially at high frequencies. The mathematical relationship between the intended contrast and the displayed contrast is derived for a generic raster device and for the two common cases of a cathode ray tube, and liquid crystal display. The pixel shape also induces contrast at unintended spatial frequencies; these are analysed and a minimum viewing distance for non-interference is derived.
