Geothermal drilling activities put significant requirements upon drilling fluids design and product selection. The rigors of high temperature, deviated drilling programs, lost circulation, drilled solids content, excessive corrosion problems, prevalence of H_(2)S, CO_(2), brackish formation waters, and other contaminates, lead to specific product requirements that are difficult to satisfy. It becomes imperative to design a drilling fluid that can provide rheology and filtration stability at various temperature ranges, while at the same time formulating a fluid that will provide formation stability and cost-effectiveness. The scope of this paper is to identify the various additives of a modular or 'component' based drilling fluid system that can be utilized in moderate (250-350°F, 121-177°C), while also providing the versatility to be utilized in some of the more extreme geothermal drilling environments (500-600°+F, 260-316°C).
