Application of a Dual Pressure Topping Turbine at Cerro Prieto for Increased Power Generation and Load Following

A two-phase turbine having two pressure expansions has been designed for topping the geothermal power plants at Cerro Prieto. Thirty-three high pressure wells were identified for a project. The net additional power generation from capturing the energy currently wasted in the flash process was calculated to be greater than 50 megawatts. The installation will provide the added advantage of load following during periods of low electrical demand thereby conserving the resource. During peak demand periods the installation will also enable increases in steam flow to satisfy higher electrical demand. An analysis of data from 6 representative wells showed a potential for the turndown of steam production from 361 tonnes per hour to 197 tonnes per hour, a 45% reduction. The design of the dual pressure rotor turbine is described. Results of analysis of the additional power production from Cerro Prieto wells and load following are presented. Installation of dual pressure rotor power plants is at the well sites is illustrated.
