Well PGM-46 in the Miravalles geothermal field of Costa Rica began commercial-scale production in March 1994. Its initial steam output was equivalent to 11.7 MWe, but soon afterward its production rate began to slowly decrease. It was down to 4.3 MWe in June 2001. Between July and September 2001, the well was recompleted to intercept a deeper, permeable fracture. The operation was successful; at present the well produces enough steam to generate 10 MWe. A brief description of the Miravalles field, along with the parameters of well PGM-46, before and after its deepening, are presented.
