High Enthalpy Geothermal steam turbines are used to convert into electricity the energy recovered from geothermal sources producing saturated steam at a temperature usually above 150°C (300°F). The geothermal steam is expanded directly through a condensing or atmospheric exhaust turbine. This paper presents the essential technical features of geothermal steam turbines, which differentiate these from conventional steam turbines, as are used in conventional power plants. It is a summary of the best practices available which have been selected based upon the last 20 years of feedback experience in order to help engineers to define and select the appropriate equipment for power production from geothermal steam. The various configurations of turbines are also described, with their respective advantages and applications. The technical features presented are those of the geothermal steam turbine range developed by ALSTOM Power, but also common to other serious manufacturers which have developed a specific range of geothermal steam turbines.
