The Cerritos Colorados geothermal field is located in the State of Jalisco, in the outskirts of Guadalajara. The Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) began exploration activities in 1970. The field had to be closed in 1987 because of the environmental impacts caused by the first exploration activities carried out by the CFE.
