Influence of Reservoir Processes on Gas in Cerro Prieto Steam

Changes in CO_(2) content and N_(2)/Ar in steam produced by wells from the eastern parts of the Cerro Prieto, Mexico, geothermal field were studied to determine the influence of various reservoir processes on the steam gases. Geothermal brines in the upthrown reservoir block to the NE of the trace of the major normal Fault H underwent intensive boiling when the installed generating capacity in the field was increased from 180 to 620 MW. In these areas of boiling, production enthalpy increased greatly and CO_(2) content in steam increased two to three times. N_(2)/Ar ratios remained near that of air-saturated surface waters but were lower in areas where boiling decreased and where production was from gas-depleted brines residual to boiling. Newly drilled deeper wells also produced steam low in gas and in N_(2)/Ar ratios, suggesting that these zones were also affected by boiling and gas loss. Injection of highly evaporated, air-equilibrated brine in the SW of the field seemed to have little effect on the gases in the steam. There is evidence of a 1990 short-term high N_(2)/Ar anomaly in the eastern part of the field possibly from injection of air with the residual brine, and evidence that in 1995 and 1996 the NE of the field produced steam with much higher N_(2)/Ar, perhaps reflecting a bubble of altered magmatic gas that entered the system at depth.
