摘要

The present study was initiated with the aim to review the suitability of Queen's College test for estimation of aerobic capacity (VO_2 max) of Indian Sports persons in the age range of 12 - 20 years. It was also aimed to study the effect of age on the VO_2 max status of the subjects so that a modified formula can be developed incorporating age in the prediction equation of VO_2 max from Queen's College test. The study would certainly help the coaches, trainers and sports scientists to assess the aerobic capacity (VO_2 max) for identification of talent as well as periodical evaluation of the aerobic fitness of their athletes. VO_2 max of 136 male sports persons (experimental group) from continuous and non-continuous events were measured in the laboratory on a computerized breath-by-breath metabolic analyzer following standard protocol. Again the VO_2 max of the same athletes was predicted by Queen's College test. The correlation coefficient (r ) of the directly measured VO_2 max with Queen's College test was 0.78. A modified equation was developed on the experiential group for estimation of aerobic capacity. 100 new athletes were chosen (validation group) from continuous and non-continuous events to validate the study. The test-retest correlation ( r ) was 0.94. The regression analysis of age with VO_2 max of the subjects was found to be low but significant (r = 0.35). The multiple correlation of VO_2 max with age and Queen's College test was high and significant (r = 0.84). A prediction equation of VO_2 max was developed incorporating age in the equation. The test-retest correlation was 0.94. Since in both the cases test-retest correlation was high and similar, it can be concluded that age has no significant effect on the VO_2 max status of the athletes in the age group of 12 - 20 years. Any of the modified equations developed in the present study can be suitably used to estimate aerobic capacity of Indian athletes in the age group of 12 - 20 years.
