PQ mitigation devices will move in two directions. External sag mitigation will have wider use and be whole plant protection. Individual equipment manufacturers will continue to enhance their products to comply with standards (like Semi 47) and customer demands for less sensitive equipment. New technologies will continue to emerge that combine energy savings and power quality benefits. For example, high speed flywheels, fuel cells and super capacitors. PQ standards will continue to evolve and other industries will adopt a Semi 47 type standard. The electrical utilities will adopt a standard for voltage quality and reliability and offer various levels of voltage quality and reliability at different price points. Power Quality monitoring systems will evolve in two directions. The portable troubleshooting tools will be come smaller and more cost effective. Permanent monitoring systems will provide PQ metering to standards and contractual requirements. Power Quality has progressed from a technical challenge to an economic challenge. It is now possible to solve any level of voltage or power quality issue. The challenge is to solve it with economic returns. The same principals apply to Power Quality issues as other engineering challenges. Preventing a PQ problem is much cheaper that solving a PQ problem but it is very difficult to show economic return on preventing a problem that may or may not exist. As the industry matures, utilities are learning there is a trade off between power reliability and power quality. They can offer the customer a choice. Users are learning they must investigate the power quality and reliability at new factory sites. In addition, they must include the PQ and PR in the site selection process. Equipment manufacturers are starting to become aware of standards like Semi 47 and offer compliance with the standard. The PQ Monkey can be tamed over time with the combined application of standards, purchasing specifications and equipment specifications detailing the voltage quality requirements. It may take another five to10 years.
