Greenhouse Tomato Model and its Simulation System

A good crop model is a powerful tool both for scientific research and for greenhouse control and management. However, in China very few researches for greenhouse crop models were conducted up to now. The main objective of this paper is to establish a model of greenhouse tomato, and furthermore, to develop a computer simulation system that could be conveniently used for scientific research and practical purpose. The simulation system was designed with MS Visual Basic 6.0 running under most versions of MS Windows. The basic framework of the model originated from an early version of TOMGRO designed with FORTRAN language, which was not convenient and friendly to be utilized, upgraded and maintained both for users and developers. In this study, some revision and improvement were made not only in optimal design of source code but in reconstruction of some relevant sub-models. For example,in order to be better fitted for application in China, a sub-model for simulating solar radiation in a China lean-to greenhouse(one of the most popular and typical greenhouse in North China) was integrated into this model. In addition, rudimental physical experiments were made in a Chinese lean-to greenhouse for validation and identification for the model, some parameters were achieved and a database related to climate data and crop breeds was set up. As a whole, the results showed that the system could be operated normally in platform of MS WINDOWS and could simulate most important values indicated characters of greenhouse tomato, and it proved to be worthy of working on the development. However, there is still a lot of research work to do including optimization and simplification of source code, modification of some sub-models, as well as further validation via 1 experiments in the future.
