According to the new SOLAS Ch.II-2/Reg. 17 "Alternative design and arrangements", it is possible for shipyards and ship designers to use a new approach where alternative, performance-based fire safety design and arrangements are accepted in lieu of a traditional prescriptive design. To stay the course and to achieve best results, the development and the evolution of the design are backed by a teamwork involving the specific skills of a team of experts, supported by the application of techniques such as Formal Safety Assessment, which have proven very effective in other fields of industry. This paper outlines the major achievements of Safety First project. The aim of Safety First - within the EC framework of 1998-2002 Growth Programme - was to ensure that a tried and tested fire ship engineering analysis toolkit could be available to exploit the possibilities offered by the IMO MSC/Circ.1002 "Guidelines on Alternative Design and Arrangements for Fire Safety". The methodology and the comprehensive set of procedures identified by this research project, which can be used since early design stage, are a real step forward in ship fire safety design.
