Constant light and long-day photoperiods have been shown to increase growth in the juvenile and post-smolt stages of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and are now general practice on salmon farms. In the case of the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), evidence also suggests that the use of such artificial lighting regimes can enhance growth and feed conversion efficiency. However, for the trout industry, further studies are needed under commercial-scale conditions to conclude for the practical value ofthis environmental manipulation. The following experiment was undertaken to determine the combined effects of photoperiod and feeding regime on growth and food conversion efficiency (FCE) of rainbow trout by rearing individually tagged fish, during 3 months.
