Treatment of bacterial diseases in aquaculture leads to environmental release of antimicrobial agents. In Denmark, the predominant type of aquacultural production is freshwater inland farming producing rainbow trout. Several studies deal with impact of fish farms (seawater) on the bacteria, but only limited studies have investigated the concentrations or amounts of antimicrobial agents in the water. The antimicrobial agents included in this study are currently used in therapy of bacterial fish diseases in Denmark. During 2002 and 2003 resistance levels in environmental and fish pathogenic bacteria were monitored at a fish farm situated at Funder A. Concentrations of antimicrobial agents were measured in the same samples. During 2003 and 2004, we sampled the same fish farm on three occasions where outbreaks of bacterial diseases instigated treatment of the fish with antimicrobial agents, and the flow/fate of the antimicrobial agents through the fish farm was monitored.
