The culture of all-female rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792), is considered as one of the most effective solutions to the various problems of early sexual maturation in trout farming. All-female populations of O.mykiss are worldwide desirable because of their late sexual maturity, relatively faster growth and superior flesh quality in comparison to males (Bye & Lincoln 1986). The purpose of the present work is to transfer and apply the technology of producing sperm from sexually reversed trout (masculinised females with XX genotype) in order to achieve production of all-female population. This project is applied in Greece for the first time. Itis considered to be of great significance, especially for the State hatchery, where the annual trout production exceeds 1000 metric tons. The sex reversal can be achieved with direct hormonal treatment (17P- oestradiol). However this method is to be avoided due to human health safety reasons; because the market product has been directly administrated with the specific hormone. This project explores an alternative treatment with 17a-methyltestosteron administration which is applied to the parents and not to the progeny. The hormonal treatment was orally administered to the larvae in order to the female population become male with XX genotype (Johnstone et al. 1979).
