Carp ponds fulfil many essential functions beyond fish production. Maintenance of aquaculture activity is indispensable for normal functioning of ponds as habitats for many threatened species of plants and animals, including birds (Dobrowolskif 1995,Turkowski et al, 2007). The use of environment-friendly methods in fish farming imposes several restrictions on fish production and generates additional costs. An average gross margin per unit of pond area has been recognized as the best equivalent of losses caused by exclusion or limitation of aquaculture activity because of the application of environment-friendly methods. Gross margin is defined as the annual production value minus direct costs borne to obtain this production (Skarzynska et al., 2005).
