Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are cells giving rise to gametes thus transmitting the genetic information to the next generations. They have their unique control over their transcription, translation, and stability of transcripts and proteins and do notdifferentiate into somatic lineages (e.g. Raz, 2003). Control of PGC rise and fate is one of the most exciting challenges for aquaculture because controlled reproduction and precocious maturation are among key problems of aquaculture industry. Establishing a platform of knowledge and technology over germline development in farmed fish species will allow innovative approaches to solve problems of genetic transfer, sterility and control of sex.
