Plant proteins have been extensively investigated for use in fish feed formulations for aquaculture (Gatlin III et al, 2007). Rapeseed meal and cottonseed meals are also valued commodities that have attracted interest for use in fish feed formulations(Davies et al. 1990; Li and Robinson, 2006). Resteieted feeding regimes commonly include a reduced feeding level above maintenance requirements for extended durations whilst still allowing moderate growth to occur. There is limited information on the utilisation of alternative protein sources and their efficacy under sub-optimal growth for fish and especially tropical species such as African catfish. Consequently a short term nutrition trial was undertaken to assess protein (nitrogen) retention for theAfrican catfish using rapeseed and cottonseed meals as cost effective ingredients in diets for restricted feeding regimes over a defined period.
