The retrofit of an electric generator at a power plant is one of the most cost costeffective means for effective eliminating various problems associated with the existing generator and for upgrading po power wer plant capacity and/or efficiency. In October 2005, Doosan Heavy I Inndustries & Construction Co., dustries Ltd. Successfully completed the first phase of a 40month long project by designing, manufactu manufactur r ing, dismantling, installing and commissioning the first of t three, 400 Megawatt hree, class, 2 2pole h pole hy y drogen/water cooled generato generators at the Ulsan Power Station operated by rs Korea East EastWest Power -West Co., Ltd. (EWP EWP) ) In August 2004, EWP signed a contract with Doosan Heavy Industries to replace three of the generators at their Ulsan Power Station, Units 4, 5 and 6. The original turbine turbinegenerator sets, -generator built by BBC and installed in 1980, rated at 473 MVA, 19 KV, 60 Hz, had each been experience ing high 120 Hz. This paper presents an overview of the design and installation challenges faced by Doosan and their experiences involved in this project, including fit up to the existing foundation, coupling alignment to the BBC turbine, turbine/generator rotor torsional & lateral dynamic calculations and replacement of the existing auxi auxiliary systems, in liary including the hydrogen and seal oil supply cluding systems and the stator cooling water supply system. Ulsan Units 6 and 4 are presently under manufacture at the Doosan factory in Changwon, Ko rea, and are scheduled for r reeplacement and commissioning in July 2007 and placement November 2007 re -spectively.
