Removal equipment for NOx in the air was developed on the basis of diffusion scrubber method. This equipment consists of two parallel stainless steel boards coated with TiO_2 as a photocatalyst and UV lamp, and it can oxidize NOx to HNO_3 and remove NOx by flowing the air into the narrow space between two boards. As the results of evaluation experiment of the developed equipment, it was found that high removal efficiency and high removal capacity for NOx were obtained. In order to change a board for TiO_2 coating into a cheaper and lightweight material, a nonwoven fabric was examined. The TiO_2 coated nonwoven fabric had the same NOx removal capability as the TiO_2 coated stainless boards. Moreover, by use of flexible nonwoven fabric, pleated type diffusion scrubber was newly devised. Theoretical removal efficiency of NOx by pleated type diffusion scrubber could be calculated by introducing the concept of a considerable diameter into Gormley-Kennedy equation. As the result, it was found that pleated type diffusion scrubber could be treated the twice volume of polluted air at the same removal efficiency compared with parallel board type diffusion scrubber.
