Indoor air pollution by emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbonyl compounds from building materials has caused a health hazard. Use of natural building material is said to be one of the mitigation methods. But, it is well known that a certain kind of natural material emits organic chemicals. The objective of this study is to measure volatile organic compounds and carbonyl compounds emitted from natural building materials. Volatile organic compounds and carbonyl compounds from "urushi", glue and wax E (from plant) were measured. Urushi was painted on MDF boards and glass board , and they were set in small chamber. Volatile organic compounds were adsorbed by tenax sampling tube. Volatile organic compounds were described by heating and analyzed by GCMS. Carbonyl compounds were adsorbed by DNPH sampling tube, and extracted by acetonitrile , and analyzed by LC. Results as follows: 1) Emissions of volatile organic compounds and carbonyl compounds from urushi or glue painted on MDF boards were different from those painted on glass boards. Painted glue suppressed the emission of volatile organic compounds and carbonyl compounds from MDF board. 2) Urushi and wax E emitted volatile organic compounds notably, and glue emitted them not so.
