Road pavement rehabilitation techniques using enhanced asphalt recycling techniques are the scope of this European research project. Pavement recycling is the best choice for road maintenance since it allows very large savings as compared to conventional options (i.e. the addition of new pavement layers) and has obvious environmental benefits (lower need for natural aggregates and hydrocarbon binders, no landfilling of demolition waste, minimal transport of materials to/from the work site). The new technology and criteria for pavement rehabilitation proposed in this project will support the generalized use of both cold-mix and hot-mix asphalt recycling techniques for road rehabilitation ensuring the highest road quality with minimum resource consumption. The project focuses on the design of recycled hot mixes using enhanced binders (cold emulsions and hot bitumen) and improved machinery for hot- and cold-mix recycling, and on numerical methods for the design and life cycle assessment of the rehabilitated pavement. Using the new techniques, test sections are constructed, monitored and evaluated in both hot and cold climatic regions (in Spain and in Sweden). This paper summarizes the program and results of this research project. The "PARAMIX" project is financially supported by the European Commission.
