IDT produces commercial vaccines as well as herd- specific vaccines. The company was founded in 1921 and for a long period manufactured flock-specific products was one of the most important business areas. Interestingly, most of these vaccines were produced first for human use. One example was a sputum vaccine which was produced as a mixture of streptococci, staphylococci and pneumococci to prevent respiratory diseases in humans. Later more vaccines for veterinary use and herd-specific sera were manufactured. It is obvious that these herd-specific immunological products became more and more important and were used as powerful tools to treat or prevent infectious diseases. Some more historical examples are convalescent sera manufactured for ducks and geese, as well as live parapox ovis vaccines for goats and sheep.
