摘要

In preparation for increased unmanned aircraft system (UAS) activity in North Dakota, including at the Grand Forks Air Force Base (GFAFB), the University of North Dakota (UND) held a collaborative, multi-purpose mission with the North Dakota Army National Guard 188th Air Defense Artillery Battalion from 4-12 October 2008 titled University and National Guard Air Truth Study. In it, three MPQ-64 Sentinel radars were deployed across northeastern North Dakota. Specific radar locations were chosen to allow overlapping volume scans to test components of the Ganged Phased Array Radar - Risk Mitigation System (GPAR-RMS) in development at UND. These data have been examined to develop an airspace characterization that includes both cooperative and non-cooperative aircraft for the monitored airspace above and around GFAFB. This characterization includes aircraft type and concentration within altitude, daily, and hourly blocks for each radar. This analysis clearly shows the effects of UND's flight school as there is an increased number of low observable targets around Grand Forks International Airport during daylight hours and on days with little to no precipitation. However, the overall airspace density in North Dakota is rather low. This dataset has proven to be valuable as examination and utilization of it in testing of the GPAR-RMS continues. Future efforts include testing data fusion algorithms, importing data into air traffic control (ATC) simulations to test UAS and ATC interactions, and comparing radar datasets with those from ADS-B to provide insight on the amount of cooperative and uncooperative air traffic. Moreover, future data collection periods are forthcoming, including one from 16 August 2010 to 24 September 2010, which will provide a more statistically significant dataset.
