Design considerations for pavement and rail track foundations

There has been a considerable body of knowledge accumulated over the past 30 years on the response of soils and granular materials to the application of repeated loading as experienced in pavement and rail track foundations. Much of this knowledge has yet to be used in design practice and empirical index tests such as California Bearing Ratio are still extensively used. More fundamental concepts, which could be more widely used in engineering practice, are discussed and examples of how they could be incorporated in design are given. Recent research in the UK is leading to the development of laboratory and field-testing procedures to be used in the context of the move towards performance-based specifications and these are described.
