摘要

The fate of chlordane in sediments may be influenced by microbial processes such as biodegradation and physical processes such as sedimentation and sediment mixing.On the one hand,in depositional environments,highly contaminated sediments may be buried by increasingly clean sediments over time,leading to a decline of contaminant concentration in surficial sediments(i.e.,natural capping).On the other hand,sediment mixing(caused by bioturbation,bottom currents,etc.)may redistribute the contaminant deposited earlier(deeper in sediment bed)to the sediment surface,leading to persistent concentrations in surficial sediments.
