摘要

High oil prices combined with environmental and policital concerns about petroleum oil are causing society to explore alternative methods for transportation fuels. Biofuels have been proposed as one near-term solution to help alleviate problems caused by petroleum oil. Dumesic et al. showed that sorbitol can be selectively conversed to alkanes by aqueous-phase dehydration/hydrogenation reactions. This involves bifunctional catalysts containing metal (Pt and Pd) and acid (such as SiO2-Al2O3) sites. The purpose of this work is: (1) to get a deeper insight into the reaction mechanism by identifying the oxygenated stable reaction products and (2) to study the reaction with different acidic catalysts with Pt as the metal sites.
