The wide-spread occurrence of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in chlorinated water supplies is spread worldwide, of which trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) are the most prevalent ones by weight (Liang and Singer, 2003). In many instances, humic acid and fulvic acid appear to be the major organic precursors to these DBPs (Reckhow and Singer, 1990). Other naturally-occurring organic matter, such as algae cells and their extracellular organic matter (EOM) are also precursors for these DBPs (Hoehn et al., 1980; Oliver and Shindle, 1983; Graham et al., 1998; Plummer and Edzwald, 2001). Wachter reported that the THM formation potential (FP) of algal EOM and algal biomass were similar (Wachter and Andelman, 1984), but some others found that the majority of DBP precursors (70%) were attributable to the cellular material, i.e., algal cells were the main precusors for DBP as compared to EOM (Oliver and Shindle, 1983; Graham et al., 1998; Plummer and Edzwald, 2001).
