Breast US for Screening, Diagnosing, and Staging Breast Cancer: Issues and Controversies

摘要

The only currently accepted use for breast ultrasonography (US) is the directed evaluation of a palpable or mammographically identified abnormality. The combined use of mammography and US as diagnostic examinations has been found to be superior to mammography alone in women with palpable masses or abnormal mammograms (1). However, in the past 10 years, there have been considerable advances in US image quality. Multiple enhancements-including improved probe technology, organ-specific software algorithms, and increased computing power-have led to better spatial and contrast resolution and therefore better imaging capability. Consequently, investigators have recently examined the utility of current state-of-the-art breast US in nontraditional applications. Recent innovative studies have looked at breast US as a screening examination for breast cancer, as a way to stage disease preoperatively and guide treatment in patients with recently diagnosed breast cancer, and as a means to discriminate between benign and malignant solid masses.
