An algorithm for calculating deformation zone geometry parameters for the process of longitudinal plugless tube rolling in a continuous tube-rolling mill is proposed. A mathematical model developed on the basis of this algorithm makes it possible to determine the relation between the roll design parameters (roll pass height, width and ovality) and the forming parameters (partial deformation, spread index). The magnitude of the resulting cross-sectional wall thickness variation can be predicted with the help of this model. Based on analyses of calculated data, roll designs and deformation schedules were proposed and successfully tested in commercial tube production. Use of the new roll designs has made it possible to reduce both the cross-sectional wall thickness variation and the end cropping length.
