A Doppler Weather Radar (named as Megha-2700) was developed and installed on the east coast of India at SDSC-SHAR by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for use by India Meteorological Department (IMD) as part of the radar network for severe weather detection and alert. The DWR is a coherent system providing the three base products namely reflectivity, mean velocity and spectrum width of hydrometeors in real time. Reflectivity and velocity based meteorological products such as rainfall rate, liquid water content, VAD, wind shear, x-z cross section etc., are generated off line. This paper presents the system overview, base data estimation, meteorological data products, calibration methodology and some of the key observations in brief and addresses the important aspects of weather radar calibration. As IMD is planning for a network of coastal radar systems for cyclone and other severe warning, calibration of individual radar systems assumes a major role in achieving consistency in networked radar data assimilation for generation of forecast on severe weather and disaster warning.
