CONTRIBUTION OF VEHICLE TYRES TO THE ROAD ACCIDENTS IN BOTSWANA: EMPHASIS ON TYRE INFLATION, CALIBRATION STATUS OF PRESSURE GAUGES FOR INFLATORS AND THEIR REGULATIONS.
Road accidents in Botswana are growing at an alarming rate. It is one of the major causes of death and injuries in Botswana. The Government is in turn experiencing an economic loss as a result of spending on resources (compensations, hospital expenses) to cater for these road accidents. One of the root causes of these accidents is associated with performance of vehicle tyres. This paper briefly addresses a research work of determining the calibration status of pressure gauges for inflators used by some of the Gaborone Service Stations. In conjunction to the preceding, consumer comprehension and vigilance level, contribution of use of malfunctioning inflators to road accidents and the monitoring of the inflators as per the regulations were studied. Tyre make in common use has been taken into consideration. It is suggested that the recommendations as presented in this paper would be deemed useful in the reduction of road accidents statistics in Botswana if enacted by the relevant authority.
