Integrating humans into complex systems involving a wide range of technologies requires considerable skill on the part of the human factors practitioner, and demands consultation with a wide range of stakeholders from end user, to various engineering teams through to the customer who is funding the work. Although structured processes are in place such as the Ministry of Defence (MOD) HFI guides, and ISO 13407 guidance on HFI, that specifies the production of a human factors integration plan (HFIP), systems/equipments are still being designed with HFI issues outstanding. The approach given here promotes the use of an HFI Operability/Usability Log to register and progress human factors design issues that emerges during the course of the design life-cycle, and the notion that the HFI Operability/Usability Log can be used as a design aid to reduce risk of unexpected Human Factors issues emerging at a point in the project when it is too late to correct.
