A brief summary of the different membrane separations currently available to the mining industry will be presented and discussed. The membrane processes described include the fractionation of pregnant leach solutions (PLS) in the copper and gold industries, fractionation and concentration of metals and acids in the refineries, and wastewater treatments to meet state-of-the-art surface discharge criteria. Included is a description of cost savings offered by an operating HW Process Technologies' (HWPT) EMS? system with a feed of nearly 2,500 m3/h barren water treatment facility relative to a prior, conventional precipitation practice at a major heap leach gold mine. This EMS? plant has produced water for four years that has met all standards for direct discharge into the environment, plus captures and returns to the operation valuable minerals and solvents which were not previously being extracted in the Merrill-Crowe process.
