Lessons Learned from an Evolving Information Assurance Lab

In 2003 we created an Information Assurance Lab ("hacker lab") as a resource for Dakota State University faculty, staff, and students. The lab allows for the use and testing of advanced, malicious, and offensive computer security tools in a safe "sandbox" environment. Use of the information assurance lab is a required component of several core undergraduate computer security courses. The lab also serves as a safe haven for students and staff who wish to conduct research on a variety of computer security issues. The focus of this paper is to review four distinct configurations which have been implemented in our Information Assurance lab since 2003. The purpose of this paper is to expose the positive and negative aspects of each unique configuration and allow learning from our experience. We present a wide range of issues including special considerations, planning, implementation, and impact on student learning for each of the unique configurations. Each of the configurations outlined should be viewed as a standalone model and could be implemented without having built the previous generation.
