Five fully formulated wind turbine gear oils were selected and their physical and chemical properties characterised. All gear oils were ISO VG 320 grade with different base oils: mineral, ester, PAO, PAG and mineral+PAMA. A back-to-back FZG test machine with re-circulating power including a torque meter was used in order to measure the torque loss. Eight thermocouples were installed to monitor the temperatures in different locations on the machine. The torque values presented were measured at stabilized operating conditions. Tests were performed at 1.13, 2.26 and 6.79 m/s (pitch line velocity), for different FZG load stages: K1, K5, K7 and K9 (arm lever=0.35 m). Both gearboxes were jet-lubricated with an oil flow rate of 3 l/min. The oil flow input temperature was 80 ±1°C. A torque loss model was implemented to both test and drive gearboxes in order to predict the torque loss behaviour of the test machine. This model took into account the friction generated between meshing tooth, the shaft seals and rolling bearings.
