Two-component solventfree, 100% reactive urethane laminating adhesives are used in high speed converting of film-to-film laminations for food, industrial goods and lawn and garden packaging. There are two general classes of solventfree laminating adhesives: (1) aromatic isocyanate-based and (2) aliphatic isocyanate-based. Aromatic isocyanate based adhesives cost less, but due to migration concerns are generally limited to use in non-food and low-to-medium performance food packaging. In medium-to-high performance food packaging applications requiring extremely low migration, aliphatic isocyanate-based solventfree adhesives have been successful. However, these aliphatic adhesives cost significantly more than aromatic isocyanate based adhesives. With converters desiring to replace solvent-based adhesives with those that are solventfree because the latter present fewer environmental impacts and a lower total cost, Ashland has developed new ultra low migration technology in two-component, solventfree aromatic urethane laminating adhesives. This new technology has a lower applied cost, provides a more sustainable solution compared to solventbase adhesives and is "fit for use" via ultra low migration results in fatty, aqueous and alcoholic foods at eleveated temperatures such as hot-fill, microwavable and boil-in-bag.
