This paper describes a positive-drive, chain-driven continuously variable transmission called the Anderson Continuously Variable Transmission, or A+CVT (Figure 1), which offers advantages over friction-dependent CVT designs. Because it is positive-drive, the A+CVT is more mechanically efficient. This will result in greater fuel economy and lower emissions. Since the A+CVT utilizes a specially designed chain, not a belt, it can be scaled to handle virtually any load requirements. The A+CVT is less mechanically complex than conventional transmissions, therefore production and maintenance costs are expected to be lower than that of other types of transmissions that are currently in use. Furthermore, the unique technology that makes the A+CVT possible is adaptable to both a dual-cone CVT design and a variable diameter pulley CVT design.
