Eco Pickled Surface (EPS) is a new and environmentally advantageous method of removing the oxide layer (scale) formed during the hot rolling of flat-rolled steel. EPS accomplishes mechanical removal of scale using a patented "Slurry Blast" technology in which a mixture of carrier liquid (water) and abrasive material impinges against the moving strip of steel. The speed, angle and uniformity of slurry impact against the steel strip are precisely controlled to achieve complete scale removal, with no meaningful erosion of the steel substrate, at the same time producing a surface with controlled surface texture. The process has demonstrated a number of advantages over the commercially accepted acid pickling and the less common dry blasting methods of de-scaling steel strip.
