摘要

Nucor's Plate Mill in Hertford County recently installed a 165-ton twin tank vacuum degasser for the reduction of dissolved gasses. The degasser was part of Nucor's plan to improve castability and to produce higher quality steel grades. Instead of using steam ejectors as the vacuum pumping system, a dry mechanical vacuum pump system was selected. Currently this is the largest vacuum tank degasser operating in North America using a dry mechanical vacuum pump system. In this paper, the different sources of hydrogen pickup and casting issues faced, the methods used to eliminate dissolved gas content and the final results achieved with the implementation of the vacuum degasser will be discussed. In addition, the general requirements of the project as well the major equipment will be reviewed.
