The most common method of heating steel plate at the Continuous Annealing Line (CAL) is with the use of Radiant Tubes (RT). The RT method has the advantage of providing greater oxidation resistance on the steel plate surface compared to direct heating. On the other hand, the heating efficiency is poor because it uses an indirect form of heating. With the start of the of the All Radiant Tube Furnace at JFE Steel's West Japan Works Kurashiki No.2 Continuous Annealing Line (2CAL), the utility cost to manufacture steel plate has generally increased due in large part to higher fuel costs. This has been the result of an increase in demand in the past several years for High Tension Steel products that require high temperature annealing. Therefore, it is very important to reduce the amount of fuel used for cost competitiveness and the environment.
