In oxygen steelmaking by the converter process, oxygen gas is blown from a top lance, and the carbon in the molten steel is removed. Oxygen gas is accelerated to supersonic speed in order to enhance mixing and metallurgical properties. In addition, the decarburization reaction includes formation and large expansion of the CO gas. To enhance converter productivity, increasing flow rate of top-blown oxygen, top blowing rate is often employed. However, when the top-blowing oxygen flow rate is increased, not only the momentum of the gas jet but also the generation of CO gas increases. From these facts, increasing the top-blowing gas flow rate causes an increase in spitting and bubble burst. Those phenomena eventually triggers deterioration of iron yield. In addition, the bottom-blown gas forms a plume, and the plume eye is exposed without cover slag.
