The worldwide production of direct reduced iron (DRI) has increased steadily over the last 50 years. Global production of DRI exceeded 87 million tons in 2017. DRI is often classified in 3 different groups; cold DRI (CDRI) pellets which may be consumed in an adjacent steel works or shipped as a merchant product, hot DRI (HDRI), which is fed directly to an adjacent melting furnace, and hot briquetted iron (HBI). Figure 1 shows the growth of these three different forms of DRI from 1970 through 2017.
