In July 2013 the first coal was injected into the Redcar SSI Blast Furnace from the new pulverized coal injection plant designed and commissioned by Siemens Metals Technologies. The plant, designed to deliver 120 kilograms per hour of pulverized coal, which equates to around 235 kilogram per tonne of hot metal produced. The plant consists of an injection system supplying 36 tuyeres, a coal drying system and a raw coal handling facility. The single stream grinding and drying system utilizes one of the largest grinding mills in operation in the world for a blast furnace application. Redcar Blast Furnace has been operating under the ownership of SSI since its restart in April 2012, following shut down in February 2010 under its previous owners. The furnace is one of the largest in the world with a hearth diameter of 14 meters. Since the introduction of coal injection the furnace has achieved production rates in excess of 9500 tonnes per day.
