Over 2 million poisoning episodes are reported to US poison control centers (PCC) annually. PCCs respond by telephone to poisoning emergencies. They rapidly evaluate the patient history, circumstances and toxic potential and determine whether the patient can be safely managed at home or require emergency medical assistance. Surge, call volume that exceeds response capacity, can significantly affect services and related outcomes; however, this topic remains understudied. Both daily/routine surge and disaster-related surge present overlapping sets of challenges. The purpose of this project is to use PCC archived data to explore methods of identifying surge-like conditions.
