An in-situ chemical sensor system has been developed owing to a continuous effort involving lab and field-testing over the past ten years. The sensor has been used successfully to simultaneously measure pH, dissolved H{sub}2, and dissolved H{sub}2S concentrations in seafloor hot spring fluids at temperature and pressure conditions up to 380°C and 250 bars. The sensor system is particularly well suited for deployment with DSV Alvin and has now been used for real-time geochemical studies of vent fluids at the East Pacific Rise.
