SNOW PRODUCTS DERIVED FROM ADEOS-II/GLI DATA: SCIENTIFIC IMPLICATION

Global maps of snow grain size and mass concentration of snow impurities were made from April to October in 2004 with ADEOS-II/GLI data. For the calibration of the sensor and validation of the algorithms, several field campaigns were carried out in Alaska and eastern Hokkaido, Japan. Based on snow pit work, the retrieved snow grain size using the channels at 0.46(mu)m and 0.865 (mu)m agreed with the measured values averaged over a snow layers from surface to several-centimeter depth. However, the satellite-derived grain sizes from 1.64 (mu)m-channel were generally smaller than those measured at the ground. The mass concentration of snow impurities retrieved from the satellite data was lower than the measured one. This is because snow impurities are assumed to be soot in the remote sensing algorithm, whereas the main composition of in situ measured impurities was generally found to be mineral dust in our sites. Our snow pit work conducted as a part of routine field experiment for GLI sciences, indicated that snow grain size and concentration of snow impurities are crucially important factors determining broadband snow albedo. An increase in snow grain size with snow surface temperature was also clearly shown both from this routine field experiment and GLI data.
