Sulphur Forming – Getting Ahead and Staying Ahead

Sulphur forming, storing and handling have come a long way since Enersul entered the business in the days of slate and introduced the GX granulated premium product. It has moved ahead as the industry has called for more environmentally friendly and safer-to-handle solid formed elemental sulphur. But it takes vigilance and effort to stay at the head of the pack and this paper discusses Enersul’s continuing initiatives in this regard. The SUDIC Premium Product specification has become the world-wide standard for defining product quality. It was developed more than a quarter century ago when slate was “king” as far as product form was concerned. Is it still an appropriate specification? Does it need updating to meet today’s standards? Enersul is exploring and examining the question. Is the forming machinery, such as Enersul’s GX, the key to high quality product forming and performance? In large part yes, but how the machinery is used by human operators and how the product is stored and handled still plays a large role in how it impacts the environment. Enersul’s efforts in this area will be discussed. Residual hydrogen sulphide in the produced sulphur still presents challenges and moves are afoot to reduce permitted levels even further. Can the industry respond? Not just a matter of specification but one of safety of personnel and storage/handling equipment. Enersul will report on how it is staying ahead in the business of sulphur forming.
