Turbulent Wakes in Wind Farm Configuration

Inside a wind farm each wind turbine generator (WTG) is exposed to multiple wake situations. The additional loads from these multiple wake situations are an important parameter for the spacing of WTG's that is presently predicted by empirical models. As these models cannot account for all aspects they have to be conservative and leave an uncertainty about their validation concerning new larger WTGs or substantially changed blade designs. Detailed simulations of wake conditions help to improve load calculation of WTG's inside wind farms and help to optimise wind farm layout in the near future. TUV NORD SysTec GmbH & Co. KG uses the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Software FLUENT for these simulations. The steady state velocity distribution and the turbulence intensity, i.e. the dynamic velocity field inside the wake, are the parameter of interest. Of which the latter is by nature more difficult to predict.
