This paper reflects on the author's career of over 20 years as a user interface design specialist working in the area of speech-enabled applications. It provides a summary of the progress made and the challenges still to be met so that the technology can achieve its potential. In addition, this paper discusses some of the author's recent work in designing speech applications so that they will be more accessible to older adults and people with disabilities. This includes work in establishing national and international technical standards for user interface design for applications targeted for the public at large.
