Introduction: Mobile components in TKA are supposed to reduce polyethylene wear and improve clinical and functional results. Still there is a lack of studies according to the criteria of evidence based medicine and hence a clinical advantage of mobile bearings is not validated yet. The aim of our study was to compare fixed and mobile platforms with no other variation in implant design, surgical technique or rehabilitation protocol in a prospective, randomized, blinded trial. Methods: 100 Patients aged 40 to 90 years without any history of previous bone surgery on the treated knee or joint replacement on the treated leg are randomly assigned to either Columbus CR~R (B. Braun Aesculap, Tuttlingen, DE) cruciate retaining or Columbus RP~R (B. Braun Aesculap) rotation platform total knee replacement. The only difference between both implants is the mobile bearing interface in RP. Surgery is performed by either of the two senior authors with guidance of an Orthopilot~R (B. Braun Aesculap) computer assisted surgery system.
